To diagnose croup, the doctor will observe the child’s breathing for chest retractions. He will perform a physical examination with a stethoscope to check for wheezing and unusual breathing sounds. A neck X-ray could reveal an obstruction in the trachea.Often, cases of croup do not require extensive treatment. Parents can humidify the air, and take the children into a bathroom with a steaming shower for up to 20 minutes. If the parents remain calm, the chance is better that the baby will remain calm. Feed children over four months of age warm fluids to relax the vocal chords and loosen mucus. Cough medicines are only mildly helpful for treating croup.
If the croup is caused by airway obstruction, consult a physician for removal.
Hospitalization may be required if dehydration, bluish skin coloration, or fatigue occur.
