Diagnosis and Treatment
During infancy, the polio vaccination is given to produce immunity. No drug exists that can kill the polio virus. Treatment of paralysis depends on the affected muscles. Damage to paralyzed muscles can be prevented with physical therapy. Physical therapy is also used to treat PPS. More than 50 percent of people paralyzed recover completely, and less than 25 percent suffer lifelong disability.
