To diagnose NF, the doctor will order an X-ray exam to view bone deformities as well as a CT scan and an MRI to view tumors. If the patient experiences seizures, the doctor will also order an EEG. For those who experience hearing loss or vision problems, diagnostic tests can be performed. No cure exists for NF. Treatment aims at managing complications that arise.
Doctors may recommend the surgical or laser removal of the tumors. However, removal of some of the tumors may result in profound hearing or vision loss. If a tumor cannot be removed surgically, the health care provider may recommend chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
People with NF, especially babies and children, should always wear sunscreen when outside.
For patients that experience profound hearing loss due to tumor removal for NF2, an auditory brainstem implant (ABI) is now available to help them perceive sound.
