    Take Action
Cirrhosis brought on by alcohol can be prevented. If you drink, do not drink to excess. Most doctors advise a daily limit of one to two drinks.

Other precautions can be taken to prevent cirrhosis:

    • Avoid uncooked shellfish.
    • Do not mix alcohol and drugs.
    • Avoid industrial chemicals, which can enter the bloodstream.
    • Maintain a healthy diet.
    • Take precautions to avoid contracting viral hepatitis: practice safe sex; if you travel abroad, get a hepatitis vaccination; avoid dirty needles if you use intravenous drugs.
