Hypothermia requires immediate medical attention. Do not try to treat a person you suspect may have hypothermia by yourself. Get him or her to a hospital immediately. In the meantime, there are several things you can do to assist someone with the symptoms of hypothermia:
- If necessary, start CPR.
- Remove wet clothing.
- Wrap the person in warm clothing or blankets. Make sure the head especially is kept warm.
- If possible, move the person to a warm location.
- Give the person warm (not hot) liquids to drink.
- Do not offer the person food, alcohol, or heating pads.
You can prevent hypothermia. Make sure you are covered in layers of warm clothing, especially on your head, when you are in a cold climate. Stay dry and do not drink alcohol. Know the symptoms of hypothermia so you can react quickly. Elderly people and young children should be especially careful in cold weather.
