    Symptoms
    There are two kinds of pneumonia: viral and bacterial. Viral pneumonia happens when a virus infects the lungs.


    Symptoms include:


    • Fever and chills
    • Feeling tired and achy all the time
    • Cough (with or without sputum)
    • Rapid breathing
    • Labored breathing
    • Chest pain
    • Sore throat
    • Loss of appetite
    • Enlarged lymph glands in the neck

    Bacterial pneumonia happens when the lungs get infected with bacteria. Legionaire’s disease is one form of bacterial pneumonia. It is usually not contagious.


    Symptoms include:

    • High fever (over 102F or 38.9C) and chills
    • Shortness of breath
    • Rapid breathing.
    • Chest pain that gets worse when breathing in
    • Coughing up rusty colored sputum, or sputum streaked with blood
    • Abdominal pain
    • Feeling tired all the time
    • Bluish lips and nails (rare)
