Symptoms
The symptoms that most obviously indicate hyperprolactinemia in women include:
- Amenorrhea (menstruation ceasing for more than six months, or failing to start altogether)
- Galactorrhea (milk secretion from the breasts outside of pregnancy or nursing)
Women might also experience:
- Decreased sex drive
- Infertility
- Painful intercourse
- Vaginal dryness
- Headaches
- Depression or other mood changes
- Blurred peripheral vision
Symptoms reported by men with hyperprolactinemia include:
- Shrinking of the testicles
- Impotence
- Decreased sex drive
- Infertility
- Breast enlargement
- Rarely, men with hyperprolactinemia may lactate (produce milk)
- Headaches
- Blurred peripheral vision
- Depression or other mood changes
