Our Team

     Advisory Council  Joseph D. Alviani

Joe’s work is at the intersection of government, business and technology. Joe is the Senior Vice President of Government Affairs for ML Strategies, a division of Mintz Levin Cohen, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo. Prior to ML Strategies, he served seven years as the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Technology Park Corporation (MTPC). As Massachusetts Secretary of Economic Affairs under former Governor Michael Dukakis, Joe established the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC), which initiated and then spun out the Medical Device Industry Council (MassMEDIC). Prior to his tenure as Secretary of the Executive Office of Economic Affairs, he served as Partner and Chairman of the Government and Public Affairs Department for Mintz, Levin, Cohen, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, a Boston-based law firm. He was President of the New England Legal Foundation and Corporate Counsel for the City of Boston in the administration of Mayor Kevin H. White. He served for three years on the board of MassMEDIC and for four years as Senior Advisor to the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council and has worked with the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) on establishing a New England Institute for Health Care Research and Innovation. Joe is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Harvard Law School, and was a Fellow at Harvard’s JFK School of Government. He is admitted to the practice of law in Massachusetts and the District of Columbia and before the United States Supreme Court.

     Medical Advisor  Michael J. Fuller, M.D., PhD.

Dr. Fuller is an internist and provider of primary care at the Caritas Christi Medical Center (Cambridge, MA). He has provided primary medical care to individuals and their families for 22 years. Dr. Fuller studied medicine and received degrees from both Dartmouth (Hanover, NH) and Brown (Providence, RI) Medical Schools. He also received a PhD in physical chemistry from Harvard University, where he was an instructor and teaching fellow. He is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College. Dr. Fuller previously served as an outside Board member of the Hospice Program of Watertown, Waltham, and Belmont.

     Medical Advisor  David Golden, M.D.

Dr. Golden is an orthopaedic surgeon, specializing in knee reconstruction, shoulder reconstruction, and sports surgery. His emphasis is on minimally invasive techniques. He earned his BA and MD from The Ohio State University and completed his orthopaedic residency at Harvard University. He remained at Harvard/Massachusetts General Hospital for a trauma fellowship followed by a sports medicine fellowship. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA). He is in private practice at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Beverly Hills, California.

     CEO  Chris Messina

The team is led by Christopher ("Chris") Messina, a medical industry entrepreneur. His whole professional career has reflected his commitment to improving healthcare. He is a director of the Massachusetts Medical Device Industry Council and a corporator of the Harvard Medical School-affiliated Mt. Auburn Hospital. Previously he was CEO of General Orthopedics, Inc., a developer/manufacturer of medical devices to treat fractures and crippling deformities, and prior to that, a consultant to the US Congress, Office of Technology Assessment on international biotechnology . Chris began his career as a sales/marketing executive at Hewlett Packard. He was a Rotary International Fellow at the University of Sydney, where he studied the design of communities.      Director and Advisory Council  John Ludden, M.D.

Dr. Ludden is Associate Clinical Professor at Harvard Medical School ( Department of ambulatory care and prevention). As a recognized leader in health care, he has contributed significantly to the industry's work on quality improvement. In his role as the Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs for Harvard Pilgrim Health Care (Boston, MA) he had responsibility for health policy and federal legislative affairs. He was instrumental in the development of "Putting Patients First" for the Board of the American Association of Health Plans.

As Corporate Medical Director of Harvard Pilgrim he formed the quality improvement department, the system of clinical quality management, and began the development of clinical and disease management programs. As a key member of the Group Health Association of America (now AAHP), he helped launch the National Committee for Quality Assurance.

Dr. Ludden currently serves on several other boards and committees, including the:

  • American College of Physician Executives
  • American Hospital Association's governance section- psychiatry & substance abuse
  • National Health Policy Forum
  • Health Care Services Board of the Institute of Medicine
  • Executive committee of the Forum for Collaborative HIV Research
Prior to his work at Harvard Pilgrim, he was the Director of the Alcohol Clinic at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. He has been a practicing psychiatrist for more than 26 years. Dr. Ludden is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School. After interning in medicine at the University of Washington Hospital, he completed his residency training in psychiatry at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center. He is also a graduate of the program for management development at the Harvard Business School. Dr. Ludden was previously featured as a Body1 Health Care Hero .

     Director  Henri A. Termeer

Henri A. Termeer is President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman of Genzyme Corporation, founded in 1981. With more than 3800 employees (2500 in Massachusetts), Genzyme has manufacturing facilities, research laboratories, and sales and marketing offices worldwide.

Mr. Termeer earned worldwide recognition for his contributions to the biotechnology industry and for his expertise in financing new initiatives. He serves on the board of directors of Abiomed, Inc.; Diacrin, Inc.; GelTex Pharmaceuticals; and Genzyme Transgenics Corp. He serves as a trustee for Hambrecht & Quist Health Care Investors and Hambrecht & Quist Life Sciences. He is on the board of associates of the Whitehead Institute, the Genetics Advisory Council of Harvard Medical School, and the Dean’s Advisory Council of MIT/Sloan. Additionally, Mr. Termeer serves on the board of directors of both the Biotechnology Industry Organization and PhRMA, the pharmaceutical trade organization.

Mr. Termeer actively participates in public service as a trustee for the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration, the Boston Museum of Science; he is also a member of the Massachusetts Governor's Council on Economic Growth and Technology, and the Massachusetts High Technology Council. Numerous organizations have honored him, among them the Anti-Defamation League's New England Region, which awarded him the Torch of Liberty Award. He is also the recipient of the International Institute of Boston’s Golden Door Award, the Genetic Disease Foundation’s Humanitarian Award, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

     Advisory Council  Dave Fleming

Dave Fleming is the Group Senior Vice President and a Corporate Officer of Genzyme Corporation. He is responsible for Genzyme Diagnostics, which manufactures more than 200 diagnostic products. He brings over 30 years of general management, sales and marketing responsibility in healthcare with emphasis on diagnostics, therapeutics, global business development and public policy. In the Greater Boston area, Dave Fleming co-founded MassMEDIC, HealthPoint and the New England Bone and Joint Institute. Nationally Dave is a member of the board of the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed). Mr. Fleming holds a BA from the College of Wooster (Ohio) and an MBA from Pepperdine Unniversity.

     Advisory Council  Thomas W. Janes

Thomas W. Janes. Mr. Janes is the Managing Partner of Boston Capital Private Equity Partners. Boston Capital's primary focus is direct investments in: (i) minority buyouts and recapitalizations; (ii) minority growth equity transactions and (iii) mezzanine investments with a meaningful equity component. Boston Capital will invest in select industry sectors that offer above average growth. Sectors of interest include, but are not limited to, business services, media/telecommunications and healthcare services. Boston Capital will invest $5 - $15 million per transaction in profitable, growth-oriented private companies and will often seek to partner alongside value-added co-investors.
Prior to Boston Capital, Mr. Janes was a founding member and Managing Director of Triumph Capital, a Boston-based private equity firm with approximately $1.0 billion in capital under management. Previously, Mr. Janes served as Vice-President of investment banking and corporate finance at Drexel Burnham Lambert and First Boston Corp. Mr. Janes was previously an Associate with Lazard Freres and Bain & Co. Mr. Janes has served on the Board of Directors of numerous public and private companies during this period. Mr. Janes is a graduate of Harvard College (cum laude) and received an MBA from the Harvard Business School.
